When we go shopping, we are looking for a good deal.  And we certainly have plenty of choice! Our shops today have a wider than ever selection of good from all around the world.  We can enjoy the benefits of the modern world; a good transport system, global communication and international trade.

But because our shopping comes from so many different places, the choices we make when we go shopping affect the lives of people all over the world.

Unfortunately, not all of those people are benefiting from global trading like we are. Many workers work for wages far too low to give even a basic standard of living; farmers are often forced to sell their harvest for less than it costs to grow them.

.

At the Fair Trade Shop we have a large selection of crafts, jewellery and other gifts, the common factor of all of them is that the people who produced them were paid a fair wage for their labour.

By trading fairly you can help producers in developing countries earn a decent living.  Fair Trade means:

  • Cutting out the middle man so that a higher percentage of what you pay goes back to them
  • Buying from producers who ensure their employees get good working conditions, fair wages for men and women, and secure employment
  • Helping producers through difficulties by giving them reasonable loans, paying in advance and giving advice on design
  • giving access to international markets

Fair Trade helps people work their way out of poverty.  It lets them take more control over their lives. It helps them to send their children to school, buy medicine; it gives them self respect.  In a global trading market, fair trade makes a world of difference
